Tau’olunga, or known as dance in Tongan. Tau’olunga is what Tongan people do at special occasions and or events, a tau’olunga is always performed or presented by a woman/girl. A tau’olunga is usually performed by a group of girls up to 10 or more, or it is performed individually.
Tau'olunga is a Tongan dance replicated from the Samoan Taualuga, so tau’olunga basically originated from Samoa. Though many of the movements or motifs within the tau’olunga come from the more ancient “ula” dance. The ula, or known as fa’ahi-ula or faha’iula is a group of young chiefly daughters. In Tongan culture fa’ahi-ula is where the girls/women would show-case their beauty and their grace, in Tonga there would be different girls from different villages participating in the fa’ahi-ula during po-ula nights. One would either be presented to the king or the king would select one of his choice.
