Integrated Reading, Writing and Inquiry

We were learning to read different sources about climate change to find answers to some questions that we have come up with and identify some interesting facts that we discovered or new questions that arise from what we have read. It has been a lot of discussions, agreeing and disagreeing with the information to answer our questions.

Fakapaheke by Langiola

I was retelling the story fakapaheke. This is a dual-language book but the teacher only read the Tongan story. It was really fun listening to and reading the Tongan story. We were able to discuss the story using the pictures and making connections with something that we know and listening and seeing words that we hear at home but finally can see the words. Love listening to and reading the Tongan story.

Fakapaheke

One day there was a young little boy named Alo. Alo and his family were at the park and Alo in the wheelchair wanted to go and play but Alo’s dad promised Alo to stay a bit and watch the children play around the playground.

After a while, Alo asked dad if Alo could go on the slide right beside the sandpit where no children were there. The slide was so bright that the color was silver and shiny, ALo wanted to show dad that he could do it, Alo

was too nervous to go on the silver and shiny slide, so Alo grabbed the corner of the slide to get up away from the wheelchair to make sure that he won’t need any help from anyone even his parents.

So Alo climbed up to the shiny slide he saw and slid down to the ground on his back. Alo asked dad for help when he was on the bottom of the slide because he wanted to go back up again. Dad was so impressed with

Alo going up and down the slide, Also Alo’s brother semi wanted to join going down the slide so Alo and Semi went up and down together on the shiny slide. Alo and his family was so happy and dad was so proud of Alo being able to go on the slide by himself

It doesn’t matter if he is in a wheelchair he still can play without any help when he is disabled. This book teaches us to look after everyone no matter what. It is open that we are being inclusive whether they are in a wheelchair or not.

I am learning to write an explanation. I understand that explanation is written in the third person, non-fiction/facts and written in presentence. It is kind of hard because you have to search for the facts before you could write an explanation but because we read about it and it was also our focus so it looks a bit easier.

Climate change - Wikipedia

How is climate change affecting our world?

Climate is what we expect. Climate is the average weather conditions of a particular region or country for a long period of time, approximately 30 years. Climate change started a long time ago as a result of nature’s activity such as volcanic eruption but now has been boosted by human activities such as the industrial revolution.

Firstly, the industry requires a lot of energy, and it came from burning coal, a fossil fuel that releases greenhouse gases to the atmosphere, especially carbon dioxide. Burning fossil fuels for electricity and transportation remains the largest single source of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere. Climate change is affecting our world with more frequent and intense storms, flooding, earthquakes, tsunamis, and heat waves. As climate change worsens, dangerous weather events are becoming more frequent or severe.

Next, the impact of climate change, if the world's greenhouse gas emissions continue at the current rate, Earth’s climate will completely change significantly. The changing of the environment is expected to cause more heat stress, an increase in waterborne diseases, poor air quality, and diseases transmitted by insects. Extreme weather events can compound many of these health threats.

Thirdly, people and climate change, the way people live produce only a very small amount of greenhouse gases. Then came the industrial revolution, when large factories were built and cities around the world grew rapidly. Trees help keep our most problematic greenhouse gas out of the atmosphere.

In conclusion, climate change matters because it describes a change in the average conditions, such as temperature and rainfall, in a region over a long period of time. It informs us that what we do affects our environment badly and we can do something about it. Climate change occurs because of human activities like cutting down trees, driving cars and factories because there are lots of gases released into the atmosphere which heated our planet.

Explanation by Vaimoana

I am learning to write an explanation about why Tonga is a special place. This was hard because we couldn't take ourselves from being bias. I am Tongan and so proud of it. But I think our teacher is trying to make us understand what third and first-person are.  Every time we write something she kept saying " is that a fact or your own opinion" it is hard because we want to write a lot of things but I think they are mostly knowledge that we know from our experience and what we heard from our parents and friends.

Tonga is a special place

WALT - write an explanation text

Why is Tonga a special place? Tonga is a small island located in the

South Pacific. Tonga has 176 islands but 36 of them inhabited and it is divided into three main groups which are Tongatapu, Vava’u, and Ha’apai. Tonga is known as the Friendly Islands. Their official language is Tongan. It also has a beautiful unspoiled environment. The Kingdom of Tonga has never been colonized by any country or foreign power but works closely with foreign countries. They earn their money from agricultural activities, remittances, and foreign aid. Tonga is a special place because of its culture, food and its magnificent tourist attractions.

Firstly, the Tongan culture has a traditional dress called ‘Ta’ovala’

which are commonly worn for funerals, work, church, special occasions, or school uniforms Tonga has a traditional Polynesian drink called ‘ Kava Drinking’ is a part of the Tongan Culture. Their biggest festival is The Heilala Festival, The festival is named after the national flower of Tonga which is The Heilala Flower.

The event starts on the 4th of July every single year, the highlight of the event is The Heilala Beauty Pageant and usually the birthday of the former King Tupou the IV.

Secondly, the Tongan traditional meal, The staples of Tongan foods are pork, chicken, beef, sheep ribs, and fish to name a few of the popular meats. You add in some coconut milk, taro leaves, and various choices such as yams, taro, sweet potatoes, and tapioca then you can taste the Tongan Cuisine. Some popular dishes are lu, ota ika, topai, and many more. Tonga can grow their own food at their own plantation, vegetables and raise their own cattle, pigs, chicken and now sheep to help with the daily finances and to feed their own family and other obligations.

Thirdly, Many years ago Tonga was given a nickname called
‘ The Friendly Islands’ because of the welcoming and their attitude shown towards visitors. People enjoy watching the beautiful scenery, Whale Watch and sparing some fish.

The person who named Tonga ‘ The Friendly Islands’ was Captain Cook, he said that Tonga gave him a warm welcome.

Tonga is officially named ‘ The Kingdom Of Tonga’ with more than 170 South Pacific Islands, many uninhabited, most lined in coral reefs and covered with tropical rainforest. Its unspoiled environment made Tonga special because there are not that many developments happening there like what happened in New Zealand and other countries. Tonga is special because Sunday there is no work but a day that everyone rest, goes to church and cooking, and visiting families.

On a bright sunny day, Alo and his family decided to go to the park so that he could have fun. He also wanted to impress his dad, Today was

the day that dad took a day off from work since he is always busy.

After that Alo wanted to go on a silver and green slide.

Since Alo was in a wheelchair he stood up with his Mum’s help so he could get on the slide. Alo started to pull himself up the slide,

Once he was up the slide he was sliding down on his stomach.

Alo needed help turning around so he asked his parents to help him turn around. Dad told Alo to hold on tightly, then dad flipped him over.

Alo started to slide down but this time he was sliding

on his back and when Alo got down his parents were so proud of him.

In the end, Alo and his brother Sami went down the slide together. Although Alo was in a wheelchair he still got to play on the playground.

Alo enjoyed his day at the playground also spending time with his family.

How is Climate Change affecting our world?

Climate is what you expect and the weather is what you get. The average weather conditions in a particular region/area in a long period of time. Climate change is causing more frequent and intense droughts, storms, heatwaves, rising sea levels, and warming oceans can directly harm animals, intense tsunamis, earthquakes and flooding.

Firstly, the greenhouse effect is a natural process that collects energy coming from the sun. Some of this type of energy is being trapped by gases in the atmosphere, that is called ‘Greenhouse Gases’. The greenhouse gases that are the most important include Carbon dioxide, Methane and Nitrous Oxide. The amount of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere has been rapidly increased. The carbon dioxide levels have gone higher than before, Lots of heat is being trapped which is causing our earth to be warmer and this is all caused by people.

Secondly, the reason why climate change is happening is because of people. Humans have been burning fossil fuels, burning coal which releases greenhouse gases especially carbon dioxide. Since there is carbon dioxide inside trees people decide to cut down and release more carbon dioxide into the world, that is called deforestation. Humans think that forests are more effective at doing it than they thought.

Thirdly, one impact of climate change is that people can right now till this day can see the rising sea levels. As the water temperature gets warmer it expands and takes up more space. Rising sea levels of water are already a huge challenge in low-lying countries such as Bangladesh where lots of floods are happening during strong storms and even the Pacific Islands like Kiribati are losing their homes to the wider ocean and most of them moved to New Zealand as refugees.

Lastly, climate change describes a change in average conditions such as temperature and rainfall. In a region over a long period of time these include warming temperatures and as well as the effects of earth’s warming such as rising sea levels and more frequent storms.

To conclude my explanation of climate change is a challenge globally. It affects the climate drastically because of our human activities. The planet is getting warmer and warmer which causes the ice melting and sea levels to rise, more frequent strong cyclones, earthquakes and more rainfall and New Zealand is experiencing a shortage of water.

An explanation about climate change by Esile

I enjoyed learning about climate change. I can see some of the effects that are happening in New Zealand and the Pacific Islands especially Tonga. We have read and watched videos on youtube about the many cyclones that happen in Tonga and it getting worse and more frequent.

Topic: Climate change Why does climate change matter? Climate change is a big challenge for the world. The greenhouse gases are great for the world but it is rapidly increasing that is making our planet too warm. There are more intense droughts and New Zealand has a water shortage.

Firstly, climate change is by nature and from people using cars, boiling hot water, because as the smoke goes up into the air. The release of carbon dioxide will make our planet too warm than it already is so we need to start using electric cars, bikes, scooters and stop burning fossil fuels because when you burn fossil fuels they release carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases which trap heat in our atmosphere and do not cut trees as it is not only affecting animals but also people as cutting trees adds carbon dioxide to the air and removes the ability to absorb existing carbon dioxide.

Lastly, the reasons why climate change is bad climate change has made sea level rise throughout the years but the 2010s have been worse than it has ever been. Small Pacific islands are getting flooded. There are refugees that live in New Zealand because their houses get flooded so they get forced to live in New Zealand. Does climate change matter? Yes, it does as it makes our planet too warm, people are losing their homes, frequent bad weather cyclones and families in Tonga are badly affected.

An explanation writing about Climate change by Marilyn.

This term we were very interested to apply our three-level questioning to explore more information about Climate change and use that information to write an explanation and this is what I have learnt. I hope you would enjoy reading it.

WALT write an Explanation about climate change

Why does climate change matter? because climate change is when the water Rise in temperature means more extreme weather there's wild storms and heatwaves. Climate change is the changes that happen to our climate which affecting our world like a frequent storm, the cyclone that is happening across the world.

Firstly, what are greenhouse gases? greenhouse gases keep our planet warm for us to live in. Greenhouse gases are in the atmosphere and spread hotness to our planet warmer carbon most important gases. Greenhouse gases are nitrous oxide ozone sulphur dioxide.

Secondly, greenhouse gases make our planet warm for us to live in. The greenhouse affecting the planet is when the atmosphere gets into planets and then makes our planet warmer. greenhouse in the atmosphere traps some of the heat earth's surface is heated by the sun and some of the heat is reflected towards space.

Thirdly, why does climate change matter? Climate change matters because it makes our planet warmer, the weather is frequently changing because of climate change. Climate change affects us because human health is vulnerable to climate change. The changing environment is expected to cause more heat stress, an increase in waterborne diseases, poor air quality, and diseases transmitted by insects and rodents. Extreme weather events can compound many of these health threats.

Climate change is something that students need to be aware of because we need to explore ways to help slow it down. The icebergs are melting, the sea level is rising which affects the countries with low land levels such as the Pacific Island countries. Increased heat, drought, and insect outbreaks, all linked to climate change, have increased wildfires. Declining water supplies like what we are going through here in New Zealand, health impacts in cities due to heatwaves, and flooding and erosion in coastal areas are additional concerns.

Fakapaheke (Sliding) retelling by Marilyn

On one sunny day, Alo and his brother and their parents went to the park. When they got there Alo was fiefia 'aupito (very excited) asking his dad if he could go on the slide. He was excited to show his Dad that he could go on the slide without anyone's help and his Dad said "ok but be careful." Alo lifted himself up from the wheelchair and onto the slide, his fa'ee (mum)and tamai(dad) were watching him pushing himself up the slide then coming downward head down the slide with a huge smile on his face. Again, Alo pushed himself onto the slide and went down he got back on the slide and laid on his belly so he wanted dad's help so he could turn onto his back he asked for dad's help and dad came and turned him onto his back. He went down again and again landed on his back. Dad was very impressed when Alo went down the slide and Alo was very proud of himself. His brother climbed up the slide and went down with his brother on the slide. Alo was excited that Dad had a day off to come with him to the park.
